What Is Jiu-Jitsu?

Martial arts training is all about being ready for a potentially violent situation

– the training needs to reflect that –

Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art that originated on the battlefields of ancient Japan.

It was created and developed by the Samurai warrior over a period of hundreds of years. Today we are left with a highly efficient and effective system of close quarter combat.

‘Jiu’ means soft, gentle, supple, flexible.

It refers to a principle of non-resistance against an aggressive, violent opponent whereby the defender manipulates the attacker’s strength and force against him. It is a very effective principle which allows a smaller, physically weaker person to overcome a larger, physically stronger person.

‘Jitsu’ means art.

Therefore Jiu-Jitsu, in Japanese, means ‘soft’ or ‘supple’ ‘art’. It is commonly known as the ‘Gentle Art’ and is a complete system of self-defence suitable for everyone regardless of gender or size.

Traditional Jiu Jitsu

Traditional Jiu-Jitsu training focuses on self-defence against an opponent(s) who may or may not be armed. A physical attack that takes place, for example, on the street is in an uncontrolled environment. That means there are no rules, no referees and no trophies to be won! There is only one option – survival!

Jiu-Jitsu techniques are classified into four main areas of study:

Atemi Waza – striking techniques
Kansetsu Waza – joint locking techniques
Nage Waza – throwing techniques
Shime Waza – choking techniques
The broad and diverse nature of Jiu-Jitsu techniques are then appropriately used against various types of attacks such as:
Striking attacks: for example, punches and kicks
Escaping holds: for example, headlocks and bear hugs
Armed attacks: for example, sticks and knives.

Apart from the physical benefits such as fitness and technical proficiency, Jiu-Jitsu training also develops confidence, mental discipline, strength of character, respect for others. It’s a great lifestyle!

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) has its roots in Japanese Jiu-Jitsu but specialises on fighting on the ground. The goal is to take the opponent down to the ground by a throw or takedown and finish him there using a joint lock or choking technique.

By using superior leverage and technical knowledge, the practitioner is able to submit a larger, physically stronger opponent.

BJJ has reigned supreme in countless no-holds-barred matches and is an integral part of the modern Mixed Martial Arts phenomenon.

BJJ also has a sporting element and students of Sunbury Jiu-Jitsu have enjoyed success on the competition mat. Competition is not compulsory at Sunbury Jiu-Jitsu but is good experience.

BJJ training also develops confidence, mental discipline, strength of character, respect for others and is a great lifestyle!

Darko has been training BJJ under John Will since 1995 and is affiliated with BJJ Australasia.
